My canoeing and rafting blade shapes are round tipped but large (18. 5" long and 7 3/4" wide). This is to yield
significant pull with smooth feel. This is probably NOT a good blade
for canoe racers as it minimizes the catch of the blade so it won't slam your muscles so hard on every stroke. This shape is for people who want to paddle hard all day long. Both edging
and tips are dynel composite. The raft paddles have dynel sock the entire length of the
shaft
to help with abrasions from lifejackets and the canoe paddles have socks midway to protect against rubs on the boat. C-1 paddles have a smaller double sock near the throat where the paddle always rubs. This blade shape has been proven over
decades by top guides on commercially guided rivers. It's big enough to move a 16' raft with 10 people but smooth enough to keep your shoulders intact. Most rafting lengths are 60-63"
depending on the size of raft being used. They all feature handcarved curly or burly maple
grips. You can also select a hardwood of your choice for the grips -- like sassafras, chestnut, walnut, or aspen. |
